Chocolate : more kilos and less euros ?
Would opening everyday a case of an Advent's calendar become a luxury? It's time to consume products made with chocolate before the high rising of prices. The cost of inputs
Inputs’ prices keep on increasing.
First, there is cocoa, which prices has risen to 20 percent high in one year. The main reasons are the bad worldwide harvesting (the harvesting of cocoa's bean has decreased by 8 percent) and also the political tensions in the Ivory Coast, which gives 60 percent of the cocoa's production with Ghana's help.
Dairy produces are not let down with a rise of 60 percent of milk's prices in one year. Milk powder is currently negociated at 5.500 dollars/ton versus 2.200 dollars/ton in September. Butter's prices even have reached 70 percent high in one year.
Then, there are the higher prices of dried fruits, such as nuts, coming from Turkey at 80 percent, which has tripled in three years. Last but not least, packing prices (paper and aluminium) has increased too.
Impacts on the chocolate's market
For consumption, the impact on chocolate will take form by a rising of about 5 to 10 percent. The highest prices would be the ones of jaw and praline.
But the rising will certainly not be effective until next year, the time for companies to dispose of their stocks.
With a growing consumption of 3 percent per year, specialized groups realize the third part of their annual sales at Chritsmas (20 percent at Easter). Considering this new variables, chocolate-makers will have to stimulate their imagination. It's a real war between great chocolate-sellers, and it is true that there are few new arrivals on this market. The leader, Jeff de Bruges, and its first competitor, de Neuville, do their best to propose industrial products which look like artisanal ones. The fight is not simple because they have to bet on the right trend to be successful.
No limit to consumption?
The greatest chocolate consumers are still the Europeans. French people eat about 7.3 kg per person per year; after the Germans with 11 kg; and far before the Spanishes who eat only 3.3 kg.
However, studies keep on proving how chocolate could be benefic on health, particularly dark chocolate, made with more cocoa. Chocolate has positive impacts on mood, blood circulation, skin hydration, arterial tension and it is also known for its anti-caries properties.
The positive point? The after celebrations' diet will be easier !
